Results of Peritoneo-Venous Shunt Applied on Intractable Ascites

Abstract
Although almost physician manages ascites with conservative methods, approximately over 10% of these patients are intractable to medical therapy. Side-to-side porto-caval shunt has been known as the best shunt procedure to control massive ascites
from
liver cirrhosis. During conservative medical treatment, frequent albumin infusion in necessary and is quite expansive.
In 1974 more safe and easy alternative shunt procedure for intractable ascites "peritoneo-venous shunt" ws performed by Leveen. But this new procedure is not popular in our country yet. The reason is not clear but probably its expansive price of
shunt
catheter.
We have excellent results of four peritoneo-venous shunts performed on three liver cirrhosis and one stomach cancer patients who have intractable massive ascites without any complication. All of patients were satisfactory with this shunt
procedure
and
saved the money for frequent albumin infusion. This is the report of four cases of peritoneo-venous shunts.
